Sounds from the South China Sea

play sound

The red arrow above points to the time that the above audio clip was recorded. Fishermen in most parts of the world cannot legally fish with dynamite. But we found numerous incidents of fishing with explosives in our experimental area. This audio clip is just one of many detonations that we heard. Notice the low-frequency signal arriving before the explosion (you must have a sub-woofer to hear it). This signal is due to the low frequency sound pentrating into the ocean bottom and traveling faster there than in the water column.
